This intensive microscopy course is a comprehensive and intensive course in light microscopy for researchers in biological sciences. Participants will gain a theoretical understanding of state-of-the-art methodologies used in quantitative fluorescence microscopy, as well as its application for exploring different scientific questions. Hands-on sessions on different with state-of-the-art imaging equipment guided by an experienced staff from universities are also provided to participants. This course emphasizes the quantitative issues that are critical to the proper interpretation of images obtained with modern widefield and confocal microscopes.
Upon successful completion of this course, participants should:
- Understand principles of optical microscopy and fluorescence microscopy
- Get an overview of what is optical sectioning in fluorescence microscopy and why it can be important in imaging a biological sample
- Describe different optical sectioning methodologies, such as Two-photon and Light-sheet microscopy
- Know advanced imaging methodologies based on fluorescence microscopy, such as Super-resolution microscopy (SRM)
- Illustrate how optical microscopy can be applied to answer different scientific questions
- Understand the basics of image analysis and its importance to correctly interpret image data
- Apply image analysis principles to obtain quantitative data
- With the hands-on sessions on microscopes and software, participants will get familiar with the technologies described
